What’s Next?

February 22, 2012

As the days count down to the end of my Master’s, I’m faced with the looming question of “what’s next?” Not to mention anytime I talk about my schooling, the follow-up question is without fail: “so what are you going to do when you’re done?”

In response to that question here are a couple of the options I’ve been juggling. Depending on the day and my mood, anyone of these could be my answer.

  1. Work in industry – this means companies outside of the government (e.g. Drug companies, private researcher firms). This option is nice, more freedom to work somewhere I’m interested in, good pay, etc. But job security isn’t as certain, locations can be outside the city, and it can be competitive vying for positions.
  2. Work in the Government – isn’t this the dream? As a resident of Ottawa, I’ve noticed practically everyone in this city wants to work for the government. Work that can help the people of Canada, benefits, job security, good locations (mostly within Ottawa); but it’s hard to get in, and a lot of job cuts are happening throughout the Government.
  3. Academia – if I’m counting down the days till I’m done, do I really want to continue in school? Not really! But being a student is all I’ve known!
  4. Change careers – I have to admit, this is my guilty pleasure option. I love baking, so how amazing would it be to quit science and opening my own bakery or food truck? It’s something I love and am passionate about, but I would then be throwing 7 years of my life down the drain. Maybe a couple diplomas would at least make nice decorations in the bakery?

So although I don’t have an answer right now, I’m not too worried. There is still time and I have some options available to me. As long as I work hard, I’ll be able to succeed and I think I can find a career that will make me happy. I don’t know what that job will be yet, but I’m excited to find out.
